Practical Home Care Skills FETAC Level 5

Who should participate in this course?

This programme is suitable for family members caring for elderly relatives and for care workers providing support to persons in need of care in their own homes.

Duration: 4 Days
No. Of Participants: 10 Participants per Programme.
Certification: A FETAC Level 5 Certificate will be awarded to each successful participant on this course.

Course Objective:

Develop the care skills, knowledge and attitudes essential for providing quality home care for individuals in need of care.

Candidate Requirement:

  • Leaving Certificate or equivalent, or relevant live and work experience.
  • Learners must also be capable of undertaking assessment work to Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate standard.
  • International learners undertaking this course should have confidence in their English language, reading, writing and comprehension skills.

Course Content

Unit 1 Communication and Listening Skills

  • How People Communicate e.g. verbal and non verbal
  • Key skills necessary for effective communication
  • Active listening
  • Barriers to effective communication
  • Communication where there is physical or mental impairment
  • Aids to communication in a care setting
  • Prevention and reporting of accidents

Unit 2 Safe Caring

  • Personal hygiene and how it assists in the prevention of infection
  • How infection can be transmitted in a care environment
  • Correct cleaning procedures to prevent cross-infection
  • Food storage
  • Fire prevention and accident prevention in the home caring environment

Unit 3 Practical Care Skills

  • Importance of Dignity, privacy and confidentiality
  • Right of person to autonomy, independence and choice.
  • Ageing process
  • Importance of a well-balanced diet
  • Assisting Personal hygiene and personal grooming routines
  • Elimination and continence
  • Moving and handling techniques
  • Making a bed occupied and unoccupied including use of aids
  • How pressure areas occur and how to prevent them

Unit 4 Care Support

  • Financial supports available to carers
  • Demands of caring on carers
  • Ways of coping with stress

Assessment Method

Two assignments 60%
Skills demonstration 40%.
