Care Skills & CPR FETAC Level 5

Who should participate in this course?

This programme has been designed specifically for Family Carers, Home Helps, Respite Workers, Care Assistants and Attendants, and any individual wishing to pursue a career in the Care Sector.

Duration: 4 Days
No. Of Participants: 10 Participants per Programme.
Certification: A FETAC Level 5 Certificate will be awarded to each successful participant on this course.

Course Objective:

Learners who successfully complete this module will recognise the personal care needs of clients. Respond effectively to the clients’ individual needs, with their involvement and use of choice. Acquire practical skills in the area of client personal care. Maintain a safe, healthy and hygienic environment for clients.

Candidate Requirement:

Leaving Certificate or equivalent, or relevant live and work experience. Learners must be capable of understanding assessment work to Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate standard. Students must be working or on work experience in the Healthcare Sector throughout their course as assignments will require learners to draw on practical experience. International learners undertaking this course should have confidence in their English language, reading, writing and comprehension skills.

Course Content:

  • Adult, child and Infant Chain of Survival
  • Learn how to call 999 or 112
  • Learn CPR for Adults and Children
  • The recognition and treatment of choking

Unit 1 Understand Client Care

  • Describe briefly the physical, emotional, social, psychological and spiritual needs of the older person
  • Respect client’s wishes and confidentiality in the delivery of care
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills with clients including: Respect, Empathy, Patience
  • Enhance the following: Privacy, Dignity, Independence, Positive self image
  • Encourage clients to participate in social events, occupational therapy etc

Unit 2 Using Equipment

  • Assist clients in the use of sensory equipment e.g. hearing aids, glasses, dentures
  • Assist clients in the use of mechanical aids & equipment e.g. mobility aids, feeding aids, washing aids, elimination aids, hoists
  • Demonstrate the correct procedures for cleaning and replacing equipment

Unit 3 Assisting Skills

  • Demonstrate on site the appropriate procedures for client care i.e. washing/bathing/showering, positioning
  • Use safe moving and handling techniques
  • Assist clients with dressing/grooming, eating, drinking, toileting, mobility
  • Assist clients with social needs where appropriate
  • Identify and assist with the hygiene needs of dependent clients
  • Dispose safely of soiled linen and excreta
  • Describe and assist in the prevention of pressure sores
  • Demonstrate the appropriate procedure for cleaning patient equipment, e.g. beds, mattresses, bed pans, baths
  • Report change in the client’s condition to the relevant supervisor
  • Complete client documentation where appropriate

CPR

  • This module is designed for participants who wish to learn how to provide early CPR to adults, children and infants.
